World Oceans Day: Preserving the Planet's Lungs

Oceans, which cover more than 70% of Earth's surface, are essential for life on our planet.

Among their many functions, they generate at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe and are home to most of Earth's biodiversity. The global economy also benefits from the oceans. It is estimated that by 2030, approximately 40 million people will work in ocean-related sectors.

Despite their importance, the oceans face serious challenges. A staggering 90% of large marine fish species are in decline, and 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed. It is clear that we must act to protect and preserve these vital ecosystems.

World Oceans Day is a reminder of the fundamental role they play in our daily lives and our responsibility to protect them. In this regard, the United Nations has chosen the theme for World Oceans Day 2023: "Oceanic Planet: The Currents are Changing."

To promote the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, the United Nations has organized a hybrid (in-person and virtual) event on June 8th. The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, in collaboration with Oceanic Global, has designed a program that highlights the wonders of the ocean and its role as a life source for humanity.

During this event, thought leaders, celebrity advocates, institutional partners, community members, entrepreneurs, and industry experts will share their knowledge about biodiversity and the economic opportunities offered by the ocean.

What can we do to protect our oceans?
We all have an essential role in protecting the oceans. Some actions we can take include:

  1. Reducing plastic consumption and recycling whenever possible.
  2. Participating in beach and coastal cleanups.
  3. Adopting sustainable fishing practices and consuming seafood responsibly.
  4. Supporting organizations and projects committed to marine conservation.
  5. Spreading information about the importance of oceans and the need to protect them.

World Oceans Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of these ecosystems and join together in a global effort to protect them.
