Adeje means "mountain massif". It has always been the place where the king or mencey in charge of the island of Tenerife was located.
The town of Adeje, the population center of the municipality of the same name, has a historic center where the traces of its long history remain. Located in the high areas of the municipality, the town was, before the conquest, the residence of mencey Axerax or Gran Tinerfe, the last of the great Guanche kings of Tenerife. After the Hispanic conquest, the town received colonial influence that was reflected in manor houses and Catholic temples.
Among the religious buildings, the Church of Santa Ursula and the Convent of Our Lady of Guadalupe and San Pablo stand out, where an interesting museum of sacred art is now located, with pieces from the 14th to the 19th centuries. In civil construction, the Casa Fuerte stands out, and next to it, an ancient fortress from the 16th century.
It is a small town near the mountain, where the rise of tourism from the mid-twentieth century made its coastal area one of the most relevant vacation spots in Europe. The municipality of Adeje houses the tourist area of Costa Adeje, the Siam Park, a water park inspired by Thailand, and numerous beaches, such as Duque Beach, with gray sand.
Adeje combines its character as a small rural enclave, full of fascinating natural trails and landscapes.
Barranco del Infierno: At 350 meters above sea level and in the heart of the population, the Barranco del Infierno trail is located, classified as a Special Natural Reserve and Tourist Site of Interest. It is a medium-high difficulty round-trip trail, lasting three hours and covering six kilometers, where the hiker encounters plant and animal species, culminating in a waterfall that flows all year round.
