The Special Natural Reserve of Malpaís de la Rasca is a protected area of 315.4 hectares located in the municipality of Arona in the south of Tenerife.
The protected area is home to prominent coastal and inland cardonal-tabaibal habitats, as well as various communities of associated flora and fauna. The landscape and geomorphological structure of the entire malpaís and adjacent cones are of interest.
The Malpaís de la Rasca route, between volcanoes and solitary coves, is an easy route that can be completed in approximately 3 hours, although you can dedicate more time if you like to stop, take photos, and record videos. The Special Natural Reserve has a wide variety and ecological sensitivity. The place hosts species of flora and fauna that are threatened. At the same time, it is an area of immense archaeological value.
To get to the starting point of the trail, you must take the entrance motorway to El Palm-Mar and park your car just before the sign indicating the entrance to the area. There, you will see an information panel indicating the beginning of the Special Natural Reserve Malpaís de la Rasca. During the journey, you will see the Rasca lighthouse and Pardela mountain in the distance. Once there, you can visit the lighthouse house and the pier.
Moreover, this is a good spot to rest for a moment and enjoy the sea views. You will even find a small area of rock pools, ideal for cooling off.
When you want to continue the path, you must follow the paved road until you reach the red and white barrier. Take the path on the left that will make you skirt around Gorda Mountain until you reach the plain of Aguzada Mountain. As this is a circular route, from there the path will lead you back to the starting point. If you want to extend the hike a bit, once you reach the Rasca lighthouse, you can follow the path that will take you to the Enojados beach and then to the fishing village of Las Galletas.
