Ifara and Los Riscos Mountains

The Ifara Mountains (275 metres high) and Los Riscos (302 metres high) are two volcanic cones that rise above a vast field of pumice tuffs extending across almost the entire south of Tenerife.

The western face of Los Riscos features a cut, a result of the erosion caused by the Callao ravine that crosses it at that point. If you are a bird enthusiast, you can admire the Berthelot's pipit, the Spectacled Warbler or the Trumpeter Finch, also known as the "Moorish bird" in this area. Euphorbias and Canary Island spurge also predominate in this area, and if you see a beetle walking among the rocks, you may be lucky enough to have found a longicorn beetle, a unique and endemic species to the area.

There are no human settlements, although there are several greenhouses and isolated buildings, as well as an old pumice quarry and several tosca (a local limestone) extractions. The slopes of the volcanic cones and the surrounding plains are broken up by old terraces with dry-stone walls, associated with abandoned dryland gardens.

You can reach the Ifara and Los Riscos Mountains via the TF-1, taking the dirt track that starts from the Granadilla Industrial Estate - Access B. About 1 km from the beginning of the track, you will arrive at the natural monument.

The Ifara and Los Riscos Mountains were declared a natural monument and an area of ecological sensitivity by the Autonomous Law 12/94, later consolidated with the Canary Islands Land Planning Law through Legislative Decree 1/2000.
