On 23rd July 1986, the International Whaling Commission decided to proclaim that day as World Day Against Whaling, now known as World Whale and Dolphin Day.
The purpose of this date is to curb the indiscriminate and torturous hunting of these beautiful endangered animals.
One of the best places to see these wonderful cetaceans is the Canary Islands, as their waters have the optimal conditions for a diverse array of marine life to thrive. Here you can find up to 21 different cetacean species, and other fish and marine creatures that you won't find anywhere else.
From the south of Tenerife, several sailing or catamaran excursions depart to spot whales and dolphins. The experience of observing these animals in their natural habitat and in the wild is incredible.
Due to its privileged location, cetaceans can be spotted in Tenerife at any time of the year. Some species that can be seen at any moment are common dolphins and pilot whales. However, for a greater variety of species, it is better to take the tour during the winter and spring months. This is because, during this time of the year, there are migratory movements of dolphins and baleen whales, in addition to blue whales and minke whales, among other species. So, although the best time to see whales in Tenerife is during the winter and spring months, you can take the tour at any other time.
